So...who is Scoutco?
Where did we come from?
Why are we here?
Scoutco has long been the pet name for the shop at my parent's house where we worked on our IH's and other vehicles. My brother and I tossed around the idea of starting a business in that name for several years. When my wife and I had our first child Matthew, and she quit her job to be a stay-at-home mom, she and I decided that we could start Scoutco out of the spare room in the house. So, here we are.
The main "player" in Scoutco is Mike Moore. Chances are I will be the one who answers the phone or email when you contact us. Our son, Matthew, is not quite ready for that job, yet. His time is coming, though.
I have been driving and playing with Scouts since 1998, when I pulled the 1980 diesel Scout II out of the weeds behind mom & dad's house and started driving it. I had several local shops price putting floors and rockers in it, and rapidly decided that I was going to tackle it myself. I learned a lot doing that job...and it isn't really "right"...but I got it done! After all, this is the Scout that I remember mom taking me to grade school in, and I'm proud to still drive it! The rest is history.
Jennifer's first ride in a Scout was in that same 1980 diesel. While we were dating in high school in the mid 90's, I took it over to her family's house during my lunch break from work (school was out for snow!) and plowed the snow out of their driveway. She rode along...and honestly, I think she was a little less than impressed. Today, the orange and black half cab 1980 is "hers". She might argue that it's really mine, which isn't entirely false...but she did at least pick the color!
My brother, Eddie, joined us in the shop in 2011. He is the main guy turning wrenches and cutting rusty sheetmetal on IH iron for our customers. I get out into the shop occasionally, but not as often as I'd like (or as often as he'd like, either). Eddie has been a gearhead since before he could drive (legally, at least!), and continues to play with everything from Scouts and such, up to stuff like his '95 Kenworth. It's been great to get him back into it...we worked together in the family trucking business for 20 years, and we have fun and work well together!
So...why are we doing this? I have a passion for Scouts, and Jennifer wanted something to do while Matt was sleeping or in School during the day. How's that for plain and simple? that's how it started! It's evolved into more than we ever thought it would! Scout and IH stuff still makes up a small percentage of what we do. The local sign/graphics stuff keeps me busy, and is really my bread and butter...but I long to get into the shop more and play with the IH stuff that I really enjoy! It's getting there, but to keep the bill collectors at bay, I still need the sign business to keep me going at this point. Someday...
